Rock climbing and mountaineering is a popular sport for an activity holiday in Bulgaria.

There are 4 mountain ranges in Bulgaria:
The Rila mountains
The Rhodopes (or Rodopi) mountains
The Pirin mountains
The Stara Planina (Balkans) mountain range

List of mountain peaks and their heights

The Rila mountains...
...form the highest range in the Balkans, with the highest peak ‘Musala’ standing at 2,925 metres above sea level. There are around 120 trekking and climbing routes within the Rila mountains, nearly half of which are concentrated on the Maliovitsa Ridge - also known as ‘Granite Paradise’ - which is about 1,700 metres above sea level.

The Rhodopes...
...over 83% of The Rhodopes mountains is in southern Bulgaria and the remainder is in Greece. Its highest peak, Golyam Perelik (2,191 metres above sea level) is the seventh highest mountain in Bulgaria. The region is particularly notable for the karst areas with their deep river gorges, large caves and specific sculptured forms, such as the Trigrad Gorge.

The Pirin Mountains...
...are in south western Bulgaria, with ‘Vihren’ its highest peak at 2,914 metres above sea level. Most of the range is in the Pirin National Park. Pirin is noted for its rich flora and fauna. Much of the area is contains the best conifer woods in Bulgaria.

Stara Planina
The Balkan mountain range is in the eastern part of the Balkan Peninsula. The Balkan range runs 560 km from the border between Bulgaria and eastern Serbia through the centre of Bulgaria to the Black Sea. The highest peak is Botev (2,376 metres).

There are climbing possibilities within easy reach of Geshaview, namely at Dryanovo and Veliko Tarnovo.

The closest rock faces to Geshaview that are suitable for climbing are near to the Dryanovo Monastery with rock heights from 5 metres to 80 metres.

Veliko Tarnovo is situated in the Yantra Gorge and is a mecca for serious rock climbers. The variety of rock faces make it one of the most beautiful and popular places for climbing holidays in Bulgaria. There are two major climbing areas - Trinity Rocks and Usteto Rocks.

Trinity Rocks
The Trinity Rocks are the second biggest in Bulgaria and are situated almost 6km from Veliko Tarnovo. The rock is limestone, nearly 80 metres high and a kilometre long and is well bolted with a wide variety of routes for beginners and experienced climbers.

Usteto Rocks
Usteto is a very popular place for rock climbing in Bulgaria. It is a rock gorge formed by the forces of the Yantra River above the Preobrazhenski Monastery. The area is located 5 km north of Veliko Tarnovo. Nearly 40 metres high limestone with plenty of climbs of different difficulties. In hot weather perfect for climbing in the afternoons.
